The Fruit-Sweetened Bakery's home kitchen.
The Fruit-Sweetened Bakery's baked goods are sweetened exclusively with whole fruits like dates, bananas, and apples—not refined sugar, sugar alcohols, or even natural syrups like honey or maple.
Why does this matter? Because not all sugar is created equally. Ten grams of sugar from whole fruit is processed very differently by your body than ten grams of table sugar, honey, or maple syrup. Whole fruits contain fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients that help slow down sugar absorption, leading to a lower glycemic response. This means a steadier rise in blood glucose, avoiding sharp spikes and crashes that can affect energy, mood, and long-term metabolic health.
Refined and concentrated sweeteners—whether natural (honey, maple syrup) or artificial—lack fiber and are absorbed quickly, triggering faster blood sugar spikes. Sugar alcohols (i.e. erythritol, xylitol) may have a lower glycemic index, but they offer no nutritional value and can cause digestive discomfort in some people.
By using only fruit to sweeten baked goods, The Fruit-Sweetened Bakery offers a more nourishing way to enjoy dessert—without compromising on flavor or your health.
Hi, I'm Shay, the owner and baker behind The Fruit-Sweetened Bakery.
I’ve loved baking for as long as I can remember—it has always been my way of showing people I care. Whether it was brownies to soothe a broken heart, cookies to say “get well soon,” or cupcakes to celebrate, I baked to bring comfort and joy to the people I love.
But over the years, I began to realize that my baking might be harming the very people I was trying to love. From my dad’s diabetes and heart issues, to a loved one undergoing cancer treatment, and a family member managing autism, one theme kept coming up in their doctors’ advice: eliminating processed sugar could make a real difference in their health and wellness. Doctors kept emphasizing how sugar causes inflammation—and how inflammation contributes to a wide range of health issues and diseases.
I knew I needed to find a new way to show love—one that didn’t rely on traditional baked goods laden with sugar.
Around the same time, I became a new mom. As I navigated introducing solids to my kids, I realized that many of the so-called “healthy” pre-prepped and packaged foods were still filled with sugar, additives, preservatives, and processed sweeteners. If I wanted to avoid those, I had to make their food from scratch.
Then came the birthday parties.
I didn’t want my kids to “miss out” on life’s little treats by denying them cake, cookies, and muffins. But I also didn’t want to compromise on ingredients. I wanted better options—treats made from whole foods, not processed sweeteners.
Ultimately, the drive to provide healthier sweet treat alternatives for my children, my family, my friends—and really, my entire community—led me to create this bakery. At The Fruit-Sweetened Bakery, I am committed to making sweet treats using only whole fruit. No added sugar. Just the natural sweetness of bananas, dates, and apples—so we can all enjoy life’s simple pleasures without compromising our health.
